Who is a Business Analyst? : Job duties,skills,roles,categories and certifications

I think based on what I have said about business analysis, you should by now have an idea of who a Business Analyst is. The question really should be, What does a Business Analyst really Do?

A business analysts job duties would be to, in a nutshell:

1. Analyze and validate changes to processes, policies, projects etc.
2. Communicate with required stakeholders who would be affected or work on a project
3. Bridge the gap between IT and the business in general
4. Make an organization more efficient at the end
5. Improve existing or new business processes and
6. Analyze the tasks needed to implement new features

To be good at this, one would needs some skills. And here are some skills to look at developing in order to be a Good Business Analyst

1. Business process and planning

Being able to plan the project scope, understand and implement the requirement of a project and identifying resources that are required for such project is a key skill that is peculiar to Business Analysts.

2. Technical skill

 If a business analyst is in the IT space, then a few technical skills are expected in order to successfully function in the space. Skills like being aware of an operating system, the hardware capabilities, database concepts, knowledge of networking, etc. will come in handy.

3. Analytical skills

 This stems from the name itself. Analyst. If you want to have an edge you have to have a great analytical skill and it important to note that, a good part of the role involves analyzing data, workflow, user or stakeholders inputs, documents and so on and so forth.

4. Leadership skills

BAs always work with numerous teams and doing this means leading multiple people. Having great and good leadership skills enables a BA manage resources, timeline and overall implementation.

The good thing with Business Analyst, like Human Resources is that you can work in any sector although the role can be slightly different based on sector. Business Analysts are classified into various categories like

Certifications available for a Business Analyst
